Game for the NUGDS Game Jam

NUGDS Winter Jam 2025 was the first game jam hosted by the ‘Game Dev Society’ at Newcastle University. I collaborated in this game jam with 2 other teammates from the same course ‘Masters in Computer Game Engineering’. This was my 2nd game jam. First one was the Spooktober Game Jam. This project was created using Unreal Engine 5.

Teammates
Strategy

We chose Unreal Engine 5 to make our game. Initially, we decided to distribute the 3 main aspect of game development among ourselves. Tom decided to work on the gameplay, Kieran decided to do the animations, and I decided to display my creativeness by building the level.

Planning

We decided to do something really simple as it was the first time all 3 of us were using the Unreal Engine. The concept of the game was really simple. The game is set in a dark environment were the player has to keep the monster away using the torch light. The monster is afraid of the light and the torch battery will keep on depleting, so you have to constantly collect the batteries to keep the monster away. To add an objective to the game, we decided to spread some gun parts all over the map that player have to collect in order to assemble a gun and kill the monster with it.

Journey
My Contribution

Tom finished the initial movement of the player (First Person Perspective) in the first few days. Then, he had some medical appointments and could not work any further on the game. Kieran finished his monster animations and was waiting for me to complete the level, so he could build the navmesh for the monster to navigate around the map. I completed building the level in 4 days. Due to Tom being unavailable we could not add the objective to the game by the time of submission. So at the point of submission all the player could do is keep the monster away using a torch, collect the batteries and navigate around the dark environment.
